SHARING YOUR LIFE ONLINE

Sharing Your Life Online

We all know sharing is caring right? But when does sharing online become a little too much and just plain over sharing? Forget the days of anonymity, we just love to share all sorts these days - what we eat for breakfast, wear to the gym, pack in our hand luggage and even the bottom of our bags! (Actually maybe not, who really wants to see empty sweet wrappers and receipts?!)

There's a massive sharing culture these days, I can't even switch off on holiday without sharing a quick snap of the scenery or what I'm drinking, are you guilty too?! Have we become sharing obsessed? I say so...

WHY DO I SHARE

I think it's nice you guys get to know the girl behind hanhabelle, it makes it more personable right :) That's the positive to sharing online, since blogging I've come across so many cool people - yep you guys. I never thought I would open up online like this but it really has been pretty amazing! I choose to share small aspects of my life here on my blog - what I look like, where I go to eat and what makeup I use. Ok it's not exactly confidential stuff but do I think it's too much? It never crossed my mind that it was a negative thing. I share to inform, share tips and reviews and hopefully inspire!

WHAT I CHOOSE NOT TO SHARE

I don't mention my line of work, because it's not relevant to my blog or that interesting! I very rarely mention my fiancé Hang, who yes is a big part of my life but aside from announcing our engagement on here, I like to keep our relationship fairly private. What things do you keep private or do you like sharing all aspects of your life?

SOCIAL MEDIA

I deleted my Facebook over 6 months ago and I don't miss it. For me it just became info overload, I don't really need to know every move people were making. Every breakup or new relationship was documented, there were no off limits! I share on Twitter and Instagram, as I prefer how it's short and sweet. I would like to think I'm not an over sharer, just snippets here and there - no one likes people spamming their time lines right?

Before I started blogging all my social media accounts were private for my friends only but I figured with my blog I had to open up socially online! It's funny how my perception of sharing online has changed. How much do you share on social media or do you have separate accounts for your blog?

What do you like to share online?
I would love to know your thoughts on this post?

    Great post hun!
I believe that there are some things that should be kept private because quite frankly, no on eneeds to know or has to know. I've seen so many wedding videos on youtube and I personally think it's too personal to show the world. There should be a fine line between what is needed to be shown and what should be kept private. I'm with you on the relationship and work side of my life ... some things are best kept private. xxx

  2. Unless I'm stalking someone on social media (hehe) I'm not a fan of over sharing. There's a fine line between 'mildly interesting' and 'no-one cares' and unfortunately I know someone on Facebook who is so far over the line, she doesn't even see the line. The line is a dot to her!! (Hoping you get that reference) I much prefer blogger sharing where everything is carefully selected to go online. It's much prettier to look at and *much* more inspiring than "cinema date again with my one". I only choose to share the superficial things because that's what people followed me for in the first place. Not the ins and outs of my personal life!

  3. I like to keep my love and family relationships private as well, it's something that I've always done. But other than that, my life is an open book in social media!

  4. Thanks hun, love reading your comments :) I agree people are all too willing to share too much with the world these days. Without sounding creepy there's alot of odd people out there, you don't really want to expose so much of your private life. xx

  5. Haha the line, that was my biggest gripe on FB...TMI status updates, when you ask them what's up, you get no response! Blogging is about the aesthetics ;) people read it with interest voluntarily because the content suits your taste. I really don't what to know about the hidden depths of their lives!

  6. I think that's a good thing, some things are best kept offline :)

  7. I think you kinda know what you feel comfortable or not comfortable sharing online, I always think does anyway really need or want to know that?! Some people really pour their heart and soul out online :o

Haha! You know what I've never posted a gift snap from the other half online, I can't help but feel it's a bit s-h-o-w-y! But I do love a good haul photo ;)

  8. I can't say I've ever thought about social media this way before. Being a blogger I share a lot of stuff online too although I think I have unconciously drawn a line of where I consider to be over share. Definitely food for thought!

  10. I meant to comment on this sooner! haha.

I've always felt a little nervous to post online because I thought it might negatively impact my chances at finding a full-time job. Now that I have a full-time job, my number one rule is to never post anything about work, as harmless as it might seem! x

  11. I always imagine that my future employer is watching what I put on social media and it helps positively restrict me from putting anything online that I would regret :)
    Great post!

  12. Hi Debra, I agree I think it's good to be aware of over sharing online :)

  13. That's a very good point, some employers do like to check out your social media these days! You can never be too careful about what you post online!

    Thanks for reading Melissa :)

  14. Hi Alice, that's a good way to think about things, once you put something out there online/social media it's hard to take it back! xx

    Thanks again for following :)

  15. I guess it is the age of oversharing haha! I feel like having a blog itself is a bit narcissistic but at least everyone who's following wants to read it, as opposed to spamming random acquaintances on Facebook... I don't have other social media accounts linked up to the blog, I don't want to overshare at the same time I feel like it's a good way to get to know blogger friends. So I'm torn on that!

  16. I also deleted my facebook quite a while ago, I think it's been over a year? I don't even remember anymore. It's exactly like you said, such an information overload and I really didn't like when everything I added to your profile got added to me "Liked Pages" and was spamming me with updates I really didn't care about. And the rants... oh, don't get me started. I will take Instagram photos and 140 characters, please.
I don't have separate social media accounts, that's a bit much for me and I just share my blog posts on twitter and pinterest without spamming them repeatedly :)

    Great post!

  17. I didn't like how they changed the format either, too much 'likes' popping up from people you didn't even know! That's why I like instagram and twitter, content is a bit more limited and easy to view :)

  18. I'm so sick of Facebook too! I've never closed it because I get in touch with my entire family there but I never publish pictures or let people tag me, I just hate that for some reason. I only use Twitter to complain about my bad days and Instagram for sharing what I'm up to, not many pictures me of me though. I guess I share all my selfies on my blog lol! X

  19. you are smart that you deleted your facebook. I really should delete it. It is almost useless besides being convenient communication with people overseas. I don't or try not to share too much about my life, but sometimes it is nice to share. I feel like a lot of the times, with social media, it is difficult to be so confidential too.

  20. Definitely agree with you on this one! I like to keep my relationship/personal life fairly private as well. I want to delete Facebook SO badly, but my work place communicates through it and again, keeping contact with long distance friends is definitely easy. There are definitely some people on my feed I wish would write in their diaries rather than on FB though!

  21. I know what you mean, I hate it too! With every new feature and update it just got more annoying haha but you're right its good for keeping in touch with people far and wide. Twitter is the ultimate venting ground, I think that's why they only limit it to 140 characters!

  22. I thought I would miss using Facebook but I really don't, friends can still reach me by other means! I agree sometimes it's nice to share but you don't want to share too much :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Haha it's a trap! You're right everyone uses Facebook for all sorts, it's hard not to communication with people on there. Haha don't get me started on those annoying status updates....!

  24. I dont have a facebook either but I also have a blog! For some reason I like having a blog vs. a Facebook! I don't know why but I do!! :)

  25. Hi Precious, I don't think we need to really need to have Facebook and a blog, I guess it's personal preference :)

  26. I'm not the biggest fan of Facebook either. Maybe once or twice a week I will logon to check if someone has messaged me, otherwise I don't touch it. Instagram is my place :)
