LE JARDIN SECRET, MARRAKECH MOROCCO

LE JARDIN SECRET, MARRAKECH MOROCCO

Over Easter I spent a week in Marrakech, with a toddler in tow our main agenda was to just relax at the hotel and not cram in too much sightseeing! After a visit to the main square in the hot sunshine and dusty streets, we realised it wasn't a nice environment to push baby around, so I spent a few mornings on my own sightseeing (was also nice to get some alone time!) I had read about Le Jardin Secret and decided to visit there early to avoid the crowds. I asked the taxi to drop me off there but he was confused until he realised it was right in the center of the Medina and Souks. Taxis can't drive down those roads so just ask to be dropped off at the Jemaa el-Fnaa square and it's a 10 minute walk from there.

I was a bit nervous and apprehensive wondering around Marrakech on my own, expecting the worse - getting bothered by the locals and vendors but it wasn't as bad as I imagined and I kinda enjoyed walking around on my own! The locals even directed me and help me cross the busy roads. I made sure to cover up with modest clothing and my camera was safe. I had read Google maps doesn't work around the Souks but it was fine for me luckily, I also made a mental note of the places I past just in case I got lost on the way back! I made my through the colourful Souk stalls and finally arrived at the Le Jardin Secret and paid 50 Dirham (£4)

This secret garden is the largest ancient Riad of Marrakech and after 3 years of restoration, it's opened to the public and I'm so glad I got to visit. A riad is a traditional manor house in Marrakech with a garden and high walls. I walked through the entrance and entered into a small exotic garden and I felt instantly calm and relaxed - compared to Jardin Majorelle, which I couldn't move as it was so crowded! A fountain runs through the garden and I read it's not just any old water but water from the Atlas Mountains. The exotic garden was lush, vibrant and full of life.

As I walked though the exotic garden I entered the Islamic garden, which was so lush and serene. There were beautiful turquoise tiles on the floor, tall palm trees, well manicured plants and the Oud el Warn Pavilion in the center. There's also a cafe, a shop and exhibition space displaying art work. Throughout parts of the garden there are pathways leading to benches to sit and relax. It was such a pretty spot I had to set up the self timer to get a few photos of me!

I had read a review Le Jardin Secret was underwhelming if you had been to Jardin Majorelle but I actually prefer this garden because it's less crowded and more spacious. I like how open the gardens were and you can walk up to the terrace and take in the views from the top. The terrace was lovely with the sun shinning with tables and chairs to relax with a coffee. It was great to see the views of the hustle and bustle of the medina from up above. I would definitely recommend a visit here is you're in Marrakech, it's an oasis of calm in the madness of the medina.

My expectation of Marrakech was different to the reality, it looks so exotic and glamorous on Pinterest but in reality the streets are busy and dusty. I felt like my face and lungs were filled with dust every time I stepped outside. The streets are uneven and crowded and it can be hard to navigate. I didn't have a negative experience but just be aware it can be different to the posh hotels and riads you see on Insta ;) Stay tuned for my next post on the beautiful Jardin Majorelle. Have you been to Marrakech? How was your experience?

I've also updated my blog design (after the whole Pipdig situation) it was a bit of a hassle finding a new theme and I had to do lots of tweaks but hopefully it's all looking/working fine now! Let me know what you think?
